Born in the Philippines, Ernesto lives and works in Brisbane as an interactive designer and visual artist. His style is distinctly graphic, developing the relationships between interlacing layers of graphic elements to make up visually balanced pieces of art. Along with other emerging and established artists, the National Gallery of Australia has acquired some of his early work last year as part of their works on paper collection. He has contributed to various projects and taken part in exhibitions throughout Australia.
"I look at my art making as an act of creating layers of visual elements that interlace within each other. It is in this relationship between the layers that I try to give emphasis to during production. You can say that this coexistence of image forms is comparable to how people relate to each other in a given environment. It only takes one misplaced entity to affect the rhythm and balance of a group."
On canvas, however, I am the creator. The way I manipulate the order, shape, texture and colour of each form is dependant on the compliment it gives to other forms. Most of the time, it is not about creating something beautiful – it is about creating something harmonious."
